Dear Peter.

Some years ago, our former Chairman and President, Perry Oliver told me "there is no game of rugby without the man in black" being of course the Referee. How right he was.

For over 20 years you have been one of our "Men in Black" and on hearing the news of your retirement from refereeing it is only right and proper that I take this opportunity to recognise how we have benefitted from your drive and enthusiasm for the craft of refereeing and love of the game.

Bishop's Stortford RFC, Herts RFU and Society and many players over several generations owe a debt of gratitude to you for all you have done to further the cause of fair play in rugby. You have inspired others to take up the whistle and have always done all you can to ensure those new to refereeing are well trained and supported.

On a personal note, I would like to thank you for being a trusted advisor to me in my role, always happy to step forward to let me know how things can be improved. That wish for improvement is important and appreciated.

I am sure we will continue to benefit from your ongoing support and advice, and I look forward to seeing you at the club often.

To close I must quote you from your retirement note to the referee team at the club as I think this sums your attitude perfectly "support each other, stand tall and keep loving the game".

Thanks to you, many will.

Yours in Rugby

Steve Dunkley
