Away to Hertford is always a challenge, but one we thought we were ready for with a strong team selected that have made good progress as a unit so far this season. However, playing with the swirling wind in their favour for the first half, Hertford were able to put our defence under pressure from the start and broke the deadlock after seven minutes with a converted try. Our defence worked hard for another ten minutes or so, holding up several more try attempts but we struggled to clear our lines, Ben's attempts to kick to safety being held up in the wind and dropping into Hertford hands far too close for comfort. Two more unanswered Hertford tries and one conversion before half-time gave the home team a
19-0 lead, but there was hope that playing with the wind in the second half would give us a chance of closing the gap - but as they say 'it's the hope that kills you!'
The lads started the second half well, and fought hard to get back into the game but Hertford were first to add to their tally after five minutes of the re-start. Finally, we got the break that we had worked for and after a short kick and chase down the pitch Ben P - The Sawbo Messi - was able to dribble the ball over the line right near the posts before diving onto it to get our first try of the game which he then duly converted. Several more good runs from Ali M and Jacob were stopped before the line and Hertford took control again with two more tries. For what it's worth, Stortford had the final say with the try of the match, some good defensive rucking won us a turnover in the Hertford half and some quick hands saw the ball making it's way out to Ali on the wing who was able to stretch his legs and find space to run into, stepping a number of tackles and driving through a few more he made it clear to give us a second try, a great kick from Ben from out wide gave us the extra two points.
Good performances from a number of players was not enough to carry the team today, our intensity, aggression and determination as a squad needs to be stepped up for these lads to reach the potential that they so clearly have as a squad.
Congratulations to Ali, being nominated as star player by the Hertford lads.
