Datchworth B 17 - 36 BSRFC B

Stortford made the most of playing downhill in the first half of our final fixture of the season away at Datchworth. Great defensive strength saw us avoid conceding an early try and the lads soon built attacking momentum from deep in their own half to set Dillon Long away for a fantastic weaving run down the right wing, covering three-quarters of the pitch with support from Jacob Chambers, Dillon trusted in his own pace and strength scoring our opening try beneath the posts to leave Paidi with a straight forward kick for the extra two points. A further four tries, two from Zico, one from Ed, a final try of the half from Ellis and two further points from the boot of Paidi saw the first half finish with a 29-0 lead. However, this was not a walkover and the team worked superbly in defensive situations to ensure that a number of attacks from Datchworth came to nothing.

The second half saw Datchworth coming back into the game and making the most of the pitch's gradient and our lads faltering fitness, running in three tries, converting one. We could have conceded more had it it not been for try saving tackles from Jacob as well as relentless tackling from Dillon and Nathan Allerton before he was forced to leave the pitch injured after deciding to use his head to tackle a Datchworth player's boot. On the whole, our forwards speed to the breakdown was letting us down although Sonny (who had come off of the bench late in the first half) proved the exception to this, first to the ruck on every occasion and giving those with less fresh legs a chance to catch up. Stortford were determined not to be turned over however, and when Zico picked up the ball deep in his own half and decided to attempt to scale the Datchworth alps no one could catch him, a great way to score a hat-trick try beneath the posts and give Paidi his third successful conversion.

A fantastic game to round off a season of growth and development for our squad and a sign of the potential we have for next season. The post-match atmosphere in the clubhouse was fantastic, Zico was nominated by Datchworth as Stortford player of the match but I hope you will all agree that every player today gave their all and deserved the hard-earned victory. Well played lads, you've made us all proud coaches and parents today.

Richard
