With a delayed Kick-Off hard Pitches and the Wind in our faces, it was always going to be a tough first half vs a very big / strong Letchworth squad, who beat a weakened BSRFC team, earlier in the season.
Both teams have only lost once since, (to Old Albanians), and a typical combative start saw first blood to Letchworth after a nice piece of backs play leading to an un-converted score, out wide. As with the Hertford HML fixture earlier in the month, the boys battled hard and didn't let heads go-down, earning them a similar try after some great play from our forwards at 3 or 4 breakdowns. Then after a period where most of the play, scrums, rucks appeared to be with 20 metres of the half way line, we finally strung a number of phases together and eventually bundled our way over to see us turnaround 12 - 5 to the good.
The game carried on in much the same vein but with the wind / slope to our good, both our 9 and 10 helped keep Letchworth pinned back in there 25 metre area for extended periods. With the forwards playing so well, we did on occasion miss the opportunity to spread the ball out wide, when we'd committed the defence but we equally saw some great defensive work required from our backs, at times.
Both sides scored another converted try each but with the clock on our side, (also a DRAW would see boys through), we took the opportunity to kick a long range penalty, to potentially extend our lead out to 10 points but while it had the legs, it faded just wide.
In the end the Blues were delighted to hear the whistle, with a 19 - 12 victory taking them to the County Cup Finals again in April, over at Hertford, (with our B's also in attendance in County Shield Final).
