Stortford couldn't make early pressure count, with Esher winning a couple of crucial turnovers in their red zone. The visitors were more clinical, when they moved quickly upfield and some deft handling over multiple phases stretched the opposition defence to breaking point after numerous changes in the point of attack for Jonathan Keh to cut in from his wing to touch down under the posts, giving Sam Morley an easy conversion. The home side struck back quickly, making their advantage up front tell, with Alex Rayment breaking off the back of a driving maul from a lineout 15m from the try line to plunge over for a try, converted by Chris Bolton. Esher were ahead again though, 6 minutes later, when Morley went over for a try, which he also converted after some more slick handling exposed a couple of soft tackles. The scores were levelled within 4 minutes, when Rayment went over for his second try - this a more typical touchdown at the back of a dominant driving maul, once again from some distance out - and Bolton converted. Despite a couple of attacking lineout glitches, Stortford maintained the pressure and Alex Gilham put them into the lead after 31 minutes, touching down from a clever chip kick by Bolton, after the scrumhalf had made a clean break from the base of a ruck 25 metres out. Bolton also added the conversion, but couldn't repeat the feat 4 minutes later, after Rayment had completed his hat-trick, touching down out wide, benefiting from an overlap created by slick handling down the backline.
Stortford missed a shot at goal from in front of the posts shortly after the restart, which would have stretched the lead to 15 points and instead, 8 minutes later, found themselves a mere 5 ahead, after uncharacteristically weak tackling allowed Ben Robbins to touch down, with Morley again converting. Within 3 minutes, though, the margin was 12 again, when Tom Mills converted an excellent solo try from Jack Biard, who sold an outrageous dummy on his own 22 to wrongfoot the whole Esher side and slice his way through the first line of defence before outpacing the cover to touch down. Declan Murphy added another try, rounding off some slick handling, after David Hayes had caught the visitors' defence napping, when he turned on his heels to step through the heart of the visitors' defence from the halfway line. Mills again converted. Esher struck back within 3 minutes, when it was the turn of their scrumhalf, Jack Blackmore to catch the fringe defence napping at a ruck. He needed swift support, which was duly supplied by Keh for his second try, with Morley again converting. Any Stortford nerves about a possible Esher comeback were settled 5 minutes later, when Will Rogers touched down at the back of another driving maul. The visitors still fought back aggressively, but some great Stortford defence on their own try line held them out, forcing a turnover. The game finished with an eighth try to the home side, when James Isaacs was the beneficiary of yet another powerful lineout drive and Mills added the extras as the final play.
