Stortford got off to a quick start for the second week in a row and had two converted tries on the scoreboard within 15 minutes, with only a penalty in reply from Richmond. The first try was scored after a period of concerted team pressure by Harrison Langworthy, driving over from close range and greatly assisted by powerful support across the line from Austin Pope. Callum Grieve replied with a penalty goal, after strong Stortford defence had held his side out through multiple phases in the red zone, but Dan Powell added a great second try, chipping ahead into space inside Richmond's 22 and gathering the bouncing ball to touch down, giving himself an easy kick to add to his earlier conversion. The home side was unable to sustain the pressure and a strong and very well-organised Richmond side steadily took control of the rest of the first half. A penalty for a high tackle against Stortford brought Richmond an attacking lineout and, although the home side was able to defend several phases, cover eventually ran out and James Langston touched down out wide. This was well converted by Grieve, who repeated the feat 9 minutes later, after Chidera Obonna gathered a well-judged cross kick, outflanking a Stortford side down to 14 men after Austin Pope had been yellow-carded. The half ended badly for the home side, when a poor kick, after Richmond had been turned over went directly to Alex O'Meara standing out wide and, when the first follow-up tackle was missed, the line was open for the pacy winger to dash over from halfway for another converted try.
Early Stortford pressure after the break came to nothing after a couple of poor attacking lineouts, but it was a handling error, as they looked to attack out of defence that cost them the next score, as one of several clever chip kicks from Powell was almost gathered by a Stortford player, but the ball slipped from his grasp, putting the visitors on the front foot and a penalty to touch produced a 5m lineout, from which Richmond were able to drive over for an unconverted try to James Litchfield. This score was balanced out 5 minutes later, when Alex Gilham took an excellent long pas from Powell to make 20 yards and crash over in the corner, despite the vigorous attentions of two defenders. What was possibly the crucial score came 4 minutes later, though, when Stortford had held out impressively against multiple phases of attack within their 22 and managed to strip the ball in a tackle but the ball looped free and fell perfectly for an unmarked Sam Dardis to gather and dot down for a try, easily converted by Grieve. Stortford bounced straight back and sustained their own period of extended pressure on the visitors' 22, going through many phases, before a cleverly delayed short pass in midfield found Josh Stannard, in off his opposite wing, to cut clean through for a try, converted by Powell to narrow the deficit to 10 points. Six minutes later, though, the gap was widened to 17, when replacement scrumhalf, Luc Jones sniped over from the fringes of one of many rucks on the Stortford line to break another bout of stern defending from the home team and Grieve again converted. Undaunted, the home side fought straight back and, with a penalty advantage after more pressure inside the Richmond red zone, a short chip kick over the try line fell to Murray Davidson for a final unconverted try. Richmond ended the game on the front foot and undoubtedly deserved to keep their winning record going, but, over the piece, Stortford probably had done enough to have earned a second bonus point.
Special thanks to Nockolds, stalwart supporters of the Club for many years and Man of the Match sponsors today. Their award went to Harrison Langworthy for another 80 minutes of non-stop action on both sides of the ball - though all 20 Stortford players can be proud of their contributions to a battling performance.
