We have been trying to arrange a match with Newmarket for quite a while and managed to find some pitch space for a nice early kick-off on Sunday.
Both teams were up for it and the first half was a very physical match-up of two teams that didn't want to back down. Newmarket scored first with a good pass opening up a gap in the centre of the Stortford defence. Stortford hit straight back with some quick hands to get the ball out from a ruck, along the line to the wing for a try in the corner. Stortford then started to work hard in the rucks, stealing a lot of the Newmarket ball and forcing the opposition to commit numbers to the ruck when our own ball. This opened up the Newmarket defence, giving us numbers in attack and forcing Newmarket to concede 2 well worked tries. Newmarket showed they weren't going to lay down and they scored a fast break-away try after a handling error by the Blues.
Out for the second half and the Blues were themselves again. Fluent rugby, hard tackles, some great rucking with quick ball out to the backs! Stortford started to dominate and scored 6 unanswered tries, despite hard work from the Newmarket defence. Overall the speed with which the Blues were able to get the ball from the ruck out to the backs, was the difference between the two teams. Newmarket were left chasing across the field, trying to catch the Blues fast runners, too many times.
Final Score
BSRFC Blues 45
