BSRFC Blues - 45 Colchester As - 5
BSRFC Whites - 25 Colchester Bs - 20
The Blue Squad gathered for the first fixture of the season against Colchester on a sunny morning at BSRFC. The blues kicked off and followed this with a good chase which turned the ball over in the Colchester half. Over the next few minutes the blues were content to move the ball from one side of the pitch to the other. Even when Colchester turned the ball over the blues charged the clearance kick down and made use of the ball to register the first try. The match played out with the blues using a very physical defence to repel many Colchester attacks and repeatedly turn the ball over. There were times when the blues could have used the overlap to better affect but overall it was a solid performance which gives us plenty of positives and showed what we need to work on at the next training session.
On the adjoining pitch the Whites warmed up for the match against the Colchester B's. For some of the players this was their first competitive match of rugby. The match was very evenly balanced, with dogged defence by both sides, with a few mistakes which were to be expected this early in the season. Colchester made the first breakthrough, but this seemed to galvanise the Whites into action. With some great movement, passing along the lines and some fantastic individual skills the home team scored 3 tries, before Colchester answered with a try on the last play of the first half. A try each quickly after half time lead to a tense final 10 minutes, but the Whites scored to ease the tension. Colchester got one back and the pressure was back on, but the team refused to be beaten and held on in defence until the final whistle. A very exciting match, which neither team deserved to lose and a great start to the season.
